I am going to Alex & Rebecca Norris Webb’s lecture tomorrow night, and suddenly realized I do not own any books by them. So who shot all those pictures in the books on my shelves? (more…)

editing one’s work

Editing is the photographer’s Achilles’ heel. Brilliant as W. Eugene Smith was, disputes over the editing of his work resulted in his resignation from Life Magazine. When he edited his own work in his infamous Pittsburgh essay the results were questionable. From 11,000 shots he printed 7,000 proofs, selecting 2,000 images. The only publication that used his work was Popular Photography Annual, 1958, publishing 88 images over 34 pages. (more…)
